Why Play NHL Trivia?

NHL trivia is for hockey fans who love the speed, skill, and intensity of ice hockey. Prove your knowledge of the coolest game on Earth!

The Birth and Growth of the NHL

The National Hockey League was founded on November 26, 1917, in Montreal's Windsor Hotel as a successor to the National Hockey Association. The Original Six era (1942–1967) crystallized the league's identity: Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, and New York Rangers. Expansion in 1967 doubled the league overnight and started the modern era.

The Stanley Cup itself predates the NHL by 25 years — Lord Stanley of Preston donated it in 1892 as a challenge trophy for Canadian amateur hockey. It's the oldest professional sports trophy in North America, and every player's name on a championship team gets engraved on it, which is why questions about specific Cup-winning rosters are a trivia staple.

Gretzky, Howe, and the Modern Greats

Wayne Gretzky holds 61 NHL records — a number that itself is a trivia question. His 894 career goals, 1,963 assists, and 2,857 points are likely unbreakable. Gordie Howe played 26 NHL seasons spanning five decades and scored a goal at age 51. Mario Lemieux won the scoring title despite missing entire seasons to injury and cancer.

Modern stars deserve study too. Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin defined the 2000s and 2010s — Ovechkin is closing in on Gretzky's goals record as of the 2025-26 season. Connor McDavid has reset the bar for offensive production in the salary-cap era. Patrick Roy, Martin Brodeur, and Dominik Hašek redefined goaltending.

How Our NHL Quiz Works

Five questions, three difficulty levels, covering all 32 current teams plus historical franchises like the Quebec Nordiques and Hartford Whalers. Easy questions cover Gretzky, the Cup-winning teams of the last decade, and famous franchises. Medium digs into specific Cup Finals, draft history, and trophy winners (Norris, Selke, Vezina). Hard goes after single-season records, expansion drafts, and obscure rule changes.

We treat the playoffs as their own universe because they are. Game-winning overtime goals, conference finals upsets, and the Conn Smythe Trophy (playoff MVP) all generate dense trivia material.

How to Score Higher on NHL Trivia

Memorize Stanley Cup winners by decade. Learn the major trophies and what each one rewards: Hart (MVP), Art Ross (scoring), Norris (defenseman), Vezina (goalie), Selke (defensive forward), Conn Smythe (playoff MVP). Know the Original Six and which expansions happened when — the 1967 expansion is the most-tested.

Finally, study the Olympic and international hockey results. The 1972 Summit Series between Canada and the USSR is referenced constantly. The 1980 Miracle on Ice, Canada's 2010 Vancouver gold, and the 2014 Sochi tournament all produce trivia.
