75 Years of Formula 1
The Formula 1 World Championship began in 1950 with a season-opening race at Silverstone, won by Italy's Giuseppe Farina, who became the first World Champion. The series has run every year since, with a constantly evolving rulebook, an ever-changing grid of teams, and a global calendar that now stretches from Bahrain to Las Vegas to Australia.
F1 has had distinct eras: the front-engined 1950s, the rear-engine British revolution of the 60s, the ground-effect 70s, the turbo era of the 80s, the V10 era of the 90s and 2000s, and today's hybrid era that started in 2014. Knowing the regulation eras helps you place questions about specific car designs and lap-time records.
Champions, Teams, and Iconic Circuits
Seven drivers share the record for most World Championships at seven: Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton. Juan Manuel Fangio won five in the 1950s. Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost defined the 1980s and early 90s with one of the sport's great rivalries, especially at McLaren. Max Verstappen has stamped his name on the current era with four straight titles from 2021 to 2024.
Constructors matter as much as drivers in F1 trivia. Ferrari is the oldest team and holds the most Constructors' Championships. Williams, McLaren, and Mercedes have each enjoyed dominant eras. Iconic circuits — Monaco, Spa-Francorchamps, Monza, Suzuka, Silverstone — each have their own histories and famous moments.

Medium pushes into specific seasons, team principals, and circuit-specific records. Hard goes after constructor championships, technical regulations, and the obscure events of the 1950s and 60s.
We cover every era. Today's casual fan who started watching during Drive to Survive will see plenty of familiar names on Easy. But our Hard questions reward people who know Jim Clark won the 1965 Indy 500 in addition to two F1 titles, or that Niki Lauda came back from his Nürburgring crash to nearly win the 1976 title.
How to Win at F1 Trivia
Memorize every World Drivers' Champion by year — there have only been about 35 different champions in 75 years. Learn the Constructors' Champions too. Know the iconic team eras: Ferrari 1999–2004, Renault 2005–2006, Red Bull 2010–2013, Mercedes 2014–2021, Red Bull again 2022–2024.
Get familiar with the circuit calendar and which races have been held longest — Monaco since 1950, Silverstone, Spa, Monza, and Suzuka are all bedrock. Learn which races have been removed (Nürburgring, the original Hockenheim, Imola for two decades) and which are new (Miami, Las Vegas, Qatar). Quiz writers love the calendar evolution.
