Every sport has its surface-level legends and then its weird underbelly — the records that should not exist, the rule changes that came from a single bad play, the athletes whose careers were footnotes in someone else's story. Here are ten facts we test in our hardest sports quizzes that even the most confident fans tend to miss.

1. The shortest Olympic event lasts less than ten seconds

The men's 100m freestyle in short-course swimming has been finished in under 45 seconds, but the genuinely shortest medal event is the 50m freestyle, regularly decided in under 21 seconds. Combined with the launch from the blocks, you can win or lose Olympic gold in fewer breaths than it takes to read this paragraph.

2. Wilt Chamberlain led the NBA in assists

Everyone knows the 100-point game. Almost nobody remembers that in 1967–68, Chamberlain — a 7-foot-1 center — averaged 8.6 assists per game and led the entire NBA in that category, motivated mostly by reporters who claimed he could not pass.

3. Two Super Bowls have ended in overtime

Super Bowl LI (Patriots over Falcons) was the first, in February 2017. Super Bowl LVIII (Chiefs over 49ers) became the second in February 2024. For more than five decades, the biggest game in American sports never needed extra time. Then it happened twice in seven years.

4. A horse named Eclipse won 18 races in a row in the 1700s

Eclipse, foaled in 1764, retired undefeated. Roughly 95% of all thoroughbreds racing today trace their lineage to him. Modern thoroughbred speed essentially comes from one horse who lived during the American Revolution.

5. The fastest hat-trick in soccer history took 70 seconds

Alex Torr scored three goals in one minute and ten seconds for Sheffield's Ranmoor in a Sunday league match in 2013. In professional play, the record belongs to Sadio Mané: three goals in 2 minutes and 56 seconds for Southampton against Aston Villa in 2015.

6. The Stanley Cup has been used as a cereal bowl

NHL tradition gives every player on the winning team a personal day with the Cup. Over the years it has been used to baptize babies, serve popcorn at a movie theater, hold ice cream for a horse, and famously, as a breakfast bowl for Cornflakes by multiple players. It also briefly went missing in a swimming pool in 1991.

7. Tiger Woods has missed exactly one cut at the Masters as a professional

From his first pro Masters in 1997 through 2023, Woods made the cut nearly every year, with only the 2017 absence (back surgery) and the 2023 withdrawal interrupting the streak. The record for consecutive Masters cuts made — 23 — belongs to Fred Couples, who finally broke it in 2024.

8. The longest tennis match lasted 11 hours and 5 minutes

John Isner defeated Nicolas Mahut at Wimbledon 2010 across three days. The fifth set alone went to 70–68, longer than most full matches. Wimbledon changed its rules in 2019 specifically because of that match, introducing a final-set tiebreak at 12–12.

9. The NFL was once an Ohio-based regional league

What is now a $20-billion entertainment empire was founded in 1920 in the showroom of a Hupmobile car dealership in Canton, Ohio. The original league had teams from Akron, Canton, Cleveland, Dayton, and the Decatur Staleys — who would become the Chicago Bears.

10. The first modern Olympics had a marathon winner who took a carriage ride

At the 1904 St. Louis Olympics, American Fred Lorz appeared to win the marathon in oppressive heat — until officials learned he had ridden 11 miles in a car after suffering from cramps. The actual winner, Thomas Hicks, finished only because his trainer fed him strychnine and brandy en route. The race is widely considered the worst in Olympic history.
